The Meaning of Circumcision

God spoke to Abraham and told him:

This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every
man child among you shall be circumcised. And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin;
and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you. And he that is eight days old shall be
circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or
bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed. He that is born in thy house, and
he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your
flesh for an everlasting covenant. And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin
not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant.
(Genesis 17:10-14)

Definition of ¨covenant¨: a formal binding agreement
Definition of ¨token¨: an outward sign, symbol

Circumcision is very important to understand because it is a requirement. Since circumcision
is an an ¨outward sign or symbol¨ there is a deeper meaning to it that is not explained.
uncovered head of the penis of a circumcised man is constantly being rubbed against his
clothing or his own flesh as he moves. It causes a constant state of mild sexual arousal.
are many reasons that God wanted the men of His people to have the covering foreskin of the
penis removed including:

1. A man´s thoughts are changed to thoughts of love; it causes a man to long for his wife
(or marriage if he is unmarried). This desire is like the hunger of a starving man; pride is
reduced and it makes him needy and vulnerable.

2. The increased desire symbolizes the desire of the Spirit of God for man, which constantly
longs to enter into His people and bring them new life. As man longs to possess the flesh of
a woman, so the Spirit of God longs to possess the human flesh of His people.

Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come
in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. (Revelation 3:20)

3. The mild sexual stimulation causes an increased number of children to be born. God wanted
to bless His people and children are a great blessing:

That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the
heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his
enemies (Genesis 22:17)

Moses wrote about the inner meaning of circumcision and how it related to God:

Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no more stiffnecked.
(Deuteronomy 10:16)

Definitiuon of ¨stiffnecked¨: Stubborn, haughty, disdainfully proud, arrogant.

And the LORD thy God will circumcise thine heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love the LORD
thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, that thou mayest live. (Deuteronomy 30:6)

And that I also have walked contrary unto them, and have brought them into the land of their
enemies; if then their uncircumcised hearts be humbled, and they then accept of the punishment
of their iniquity: Then will I remember my covenant... (Leviticus 26:41)

If an uncircumcised heart is proud and a circumcised heart is humble, then we see that being
humble, meek, tender and vulnerable is the requirement of God´s people.

The prophets wrote about the spiritual meaning of circumcision:

For thus saith the LORD to the men of Judah and Jerusalem, Break up your fallow ground, and
sow not among thorns. Circumcise yourselves to the LORD, and take away the foreskin of your
heart, ye men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem: lest my fury come forth like fire, and burn
that none can quench it, because of the evil of your doings. (Jeremiah 4:3-4)

Thus saith the Lord GOD; No stranger, uncircumcised in heart, nor uncircumcised in flesh, shall
enter into my sanctuary, of any stranger that is among the children of Israel. (Ezekiel 44:9)

The apostles wrote about the other meaning of circumcision:

Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your
fathers did, so do ye. (Acts 7:51)

For circumcision verily profiteth, if thou keep the law: but if thou be a breaker of the law,
thy circumcision is made uncircumcision. Therefore if the uncircumcision keep the
righteousness of the law, shall not his uncircumcision be counted for circumcision? And
shall not uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfil the law, judge thee, who by the
letter and circumcision dost transgress the law? For he is not a Jew, which is one
outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: But he is a Jew,
which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the
letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God. (Romans 2:25-29)

And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had
yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be
circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also (Romans 4:11)

Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm
the promises made unto the fathers: And that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it
is written, For this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name.
(Romans 15:8-9)

Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but the keeping of the commandments
of God. (1 Corinthians 7:19)

For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which
worketh by love. (Galatians 5:6)

For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new
creature. (Galatians 6:15)

For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and
have no confidence in the flesh. (Philippians 3:3)
In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the
body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: Buried with him in baptism, wherein
also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from
the dead. And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he
quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses (Collosians 2:11-13)

The ¨circumcision of the flesh¨ is the removal of the skin covering the head of the penis.
Circumcision of the penis makes the penis tender and vulnerable. There is an increased desire to
copulate and make children because of the constant mild sexual stimulation throughout the day.

The ¨circumcision of the heart¨ is the removal of the pride and self-confidence.
Circumcision of the heart makes the heart tender and vulnerable. There is an increased desire to
be united spiritually with God and be reborn because of constant meditation and prayer
throughout the day.

In essence circumcision is making yourself needy. In the flesh, needy for sex. In the heart,
needy for God. This neediness is a requirement. It pleases Him for us to spiritually desire Him.
Wouldn´t every husband wish his wife constantly physically desired him? The ways of a husband
and wife are God given signs in this world to teach us about the will of God.

In the covenant of Abraham anyone who was not circumcised in the flesh was cut off from the
people and none of God´s promises applied to him. Likewise in the covenant of Jesus anyone
who is not circumcised in heart
(humbled and fearful) is cut off and none of His promises apply
to him:

And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and
drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares. (Luke 21:34)
